Research
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s
leading organization funding leukemia, lymphoma
and myeloma research.
Our Investment
Since its inception in 1949, the Society has invested
more than $360 million in research to find the
causes and cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
Our research budget for the next fiscal year
is $45 million, and $16.2 million of these funds
will go to new research grants.
Currently, the Society has spent or committed
to spend more than $164.1 million for research:
- Leukemia research:
more than $85 million
- Lymphoma research: nearly
$48 million
- Myeloma research: approximately
$30 million
Our Programs
The Society developed a triumvirate
of programs to support the work of leading-edge
researchers:
- The Career Development
Program provides
stipends to investigators in the early stages
of their careers,
allowing them to devote their time to leukemia,
lymphoma and myeloma research.
- The Translational
Research Program encourages and supports research
that shows strong promise
for translating basic biomedical knowledge to new treatments
that will ultimately prolong and enhance
patients’ lives.
The program’s goal is to accelerate
the transfer of findings from the laboratory
to clinical application.
- The Specialized
Center of Research (SCOR) Program encourages
multidisciplinary research through
the collaboration of leading-edge researchers from
at least three research programs. The
concept behind the program is that leukemia,
lymphoma and myeloma
treatments and cures will be discovered
most quickly in an environment of collaboration and teamwork.
Our
Direction
The Society currently funds top researchers
who are exploring new areas of research, such
as:
- Molecularly targeted
drugs
- Radioimmunotherapy
- Cancer
vaccines
- Novel, molecular therapeutics
